Some of the best memories are made when the only thing on the agenda is good food, great company, and time to just be together.
This Father's Day, we traded fancy brunches and crowded restaurants for something a little more laid-back, a little more nostalgic, and a whole lot more delicious: a trip to Wally’s Drive-In in Buckley, Washington. And let me tell you—between the bacon cheeseburgers, the cool cars, and the laughs with three generations of family around the table, it turned into one of those days you tuck away in your heart and smile about for years to come.

Pulling In: Where Nostalgia Meets Fresh-Cut Fries
If you’ve never been to Wally’s Drive-In, just know this: it’s the spot for classic American drive-in food, complete with milkshakes so thick you need a spoon and burgers that require two hands and a game plan. The Wally Whopper (their signature burger) is reason enough to make the drive from anywhere in the South Sound.
On Father’s Day, our family pulled into the lot one after another—grandparents, aunts, uncles, and all the kids in tow—already grinning because we knew what was coming. Burgers, fries, onion rings, and shakes in hand, we made our way over to the gazebo-style picnic area, where we could all sit together, laugh, and take in the action of the day.

Classic Cars & Community Vibes
There’s something timeless about watching cool cars roll through a place like Wally’s. Between bites of crispy onion rings and sips of chocolate shake, we watched a steady stream of vintage rides, pickups, and souped-up cruisers pulling in and out of the drive-thru. Every vehicle seemed to come with a wave, a rev, or a thumbs-up, and for a moment, it felt like stepping into a scene from a classic summer movie.
The kids pointed out their favorites—“That one looks like Lightning McQueen!”—while the grown-ups swapped stories about their first cars or the ones they dreamed of driving when they were young. There was a shared sense of wonder and appreciation that only something like an old-school drive-in can bring out.

From Milkshakes to Monkey Bars
Once the last fry had been claimed and the final cherry picked from someone’s milkshake, we wandered behind the restaurant to the local park and outdoor logging museum. It’s one of Buckley’s hidden gems... a place where kids can burn off a burger-fueled sugar rush and adults can soak in a little PNW history.
The playground was full of laughter, while just a few feet away, the old logging machinery sparked questions and curiosity. Rusted gears, towering saws, and relics from the area’s timber past stood like sculptures in the grass, inviting us to slow down and take a peek into another time.

The Heart of the Day
More than the food (which was, honestly, fantastic), more than the fun (which there was plenty of), what really made the day special was how simple it all was. No reservations. No rush. Just a shared meal under the gazebo, the smell of fries in the air, and the feeling of being surrounded by the people who matter most.
Father’s Day is meant to be about honoring the dads and father-figures in our lives; and we did just that. But we also celebrated something just as important: the joy of togetherness. The kind that doesn’t need a big production to feel big. The kind that shows up in conversations over burgers and high-fives at the playground.

Buckley, We’ll Be Back
Wally’s Drive-In, thank you for being the backdrop to a day we won’t forget. From the first sizzle of the grill to the last lap around the playground, you helped us create a Father’s Day full of smiles, full stomachs, and full hearts.
We’ll definitely be back! And next time, we might just bring a few more folks along for the ride.
